One of the Best Safari Lodges in South Africa - Inside the rewly renovated Kings Camp

Kings Camp

I recently had the privilege of conducting a site inspection at the recently refurbished Kings Camp in the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, and it reminded me why this is one of the best safari lodges in South Africa and loved most by our clients who safari here.

Kings Camp was actually opened in 1995 by our grandfather, Joof Alberts, so I really had a sense of pride seeing something that matters to our family continue to grow, evolve, and honestly, get better with age.

What struck me most this time wasn't really one big thing, it was the way the whole central area of the camp, now anchored by a new glass-fronted bar and lounge, invites you to spend some time outside of your room, enjoying your first morning cup of coffee or afternoon G&T whilst watching the animals wander past. There is also a new sunken firepit in front of the bar area, which was the perfect place to relax around the fire after our first safari drive, sharing stories with other guests staying at Kings Camp. One couple even mentioned that this was their eighth time at Kings Camp, having visited almost every country in Africa, yet Kings Camp still remains their favourite, which is why they return year after year.

The camp also has a newly built photographic studio, set high above the dining area overlooking the Kings Camp underground hide. Combined with one of the best underground hides in Africa, Kings Camp is definitely equipped for photographic enthusiasts. I spent a good hour down in the hide myself, low enough to be at eye level with the waterhole, and there's something about watching wildlife drink from a few metres away, that you simply don't get from a vehicle.

I also managed to get a sneak peek at the new wellness centre currently under construction, and from what's already taking shape, it is going to be another reason to want to spend more time at camp between game drives. I'll save the details for when it's finished and I can experience it properly, but it is clear Kings Camp isn't slowing down when it comes to investing in the guest experience.

The comfort and beauty of the camp aside, the Timbavati Private Nature Reserve, where Kings Camp is located, is one of the best wildlife destinations in Africa. Although my visit was short, in just two game drives we saw 4 of the Big 5 (buffalo, rhino, lion and elephant), along with plenty of general game. Visiting in June is one of the best times to go, as winter has properly set in across the Timbavati, with misty mornings setting the mood for the early drives. The bush is also less dense in winter, making it easier to spot the animals. During the morning drive, we stopped for Julia's famous ranger's coffee, which is coffee, hot chocolate and Amarula (a local South African favourite). And after another successful evening drive, as the sun began to set over the bushveld painting the skies, we enjoyed a gin & tonic at a waterhole as the elephants came down to drink.

If you have stayed at Kings Camp before, you will still find the same welcoming atmosphere that makes it so special, now complemented by a few thoughtful additions that enhance the experience. And if it is still on your wish list, there has never been a better time to experience a stay here!
