When you're on a safari in Africa during the winter months (May-August), it's all about finding that perfect blend of comfort, practicality and style to handle the changing temperatures of the African wilderness.
Here's our personal guide on how you can gear up:
1. The Essential Safari Jacket
First up, grab a lightweight, water-resistant safari jacket. K-Way is a trusty brand that we personally love! This will be your best friend during those chilly early morning and evening game drives.
2. The Trusty Long-Sleeve Shirt
Underneath the jacket, go for a breathable long-sleeve shirt in neutral colours like khaki or olive - these shades help you blend into the environment. Plus, the long sleeves will protect you from the sun and keep you warm.
3. Trousers
For your pants, you can’t go wrong with comfortable, durable cargo trousers or your best jeans. These will keep you warm on the morning and evening game drives and are suitable for walking safaris if offered by your safari lodge.
4. Sturdy Footwear
Your footwear is crucial. Pack a pair of hiking boots, sneakers or closed shoes. If you really want to fit into the African wilderness, get yourself a pair of 'vellies' - the Freedom of Movement vellies are our favourite! They’ll protect your feet and provide the support you need on uneven surfaces. And don’t forget your socks to keep your feet dry.
5. Headgear
A hat is essential to protect your face and neck from the sun - we personally prefer and recommend our Lewis & Luyt caps.
6. Essential Accessories
Lastly, don’t forget your accessories! Sunglasses are a must for protecting your eyes from the sun, a scarf and beanie to provide extra warmth, a bag to keep all your belongings in on game drives and gloves are great for those crisp morning drives. Lastly if you have, pack in your binoculars to enhance your game viewing sightings! Vortex Optics are our go to choice for binoculars - lookout for our upcoming blog on choosing the best binoculars for you!
We hope you find this useful for your next safari trip!
